Basics of Meteorology

Lecturer: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Fabian Hoffmann (f.hoffmann@fu-berlin.de).

- The module begins in the winter semester and consists of a lecture (LV 24300201) + exercise group 1 or 2 (LV 24300202 or 24301802) + ActionLearning (LV 24300347 “Observation practice” as a block course during the holidays): 2+2+2 SWS, 8 LP.

Admission Requirements: none.

Qualification Objectives: Students will acquire a basic knowledge of theoretical and practical approaches and become familiar with the working methods of meteorology. They will understand meteorological phenomena as the result of physical processes.

Lecture + Exercise content: Composition and structure of the atmosphere, basic thermodynamic equations, temperature gradients and stability, equations of motion, humidity variables, precipitation formation, weather systems.

Action learning content (observation practice): Fundamentals of meteorological observation and meteorological measurements, observed and measured variables and phenomena, processing, presentation, and interpretation of measurements and observations, processing in field representations (weather maps).
