Major porphyry copper deposits related to mountain chain

The adjacent figure illustrates the close spatial relationship between the world's principal mountain chains and the distribution of some major ore deposits, namely porphyry copper and epithermal gold.

Because  these deposits are formed mostly in  active tectonic settings and at shallow depth  (less than 6 km), their existence in old mountain chains is normally much less common than in younger orogens, mainly due to erosion.
