We are proud to share that our team member and PhD canditate M. Sc. Alberto Anticoli has published a new article in the Journal of Rural Studies, titled "Spatial land conflict typologies in the Atlantic Forest of South America".
Among others, co-authored with M. Sc. Ahuvit Trumper and Jun.-Prof. Dr. María Piquer-Rodríguez, the study examines 152 land conflicts across the Atlantic Forest region from 1985 to 2023.
The paper shows how land conflicts reflect distinct socio-environmental trajectories in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. While Brazil’s conflicts are mainly driven by the expansion of large-scale agriculture, Argentina’s forestry industry has sparked tensions with rural and Indigenous communities. In Paraguay, rapid deforestation and intensive land use by large landowners impact local livelihoods.
Using a mixed-methods approach combining literature review, gray literature, and spatial land use analysis, the authors highlight how conflict hotspots concentrate in the Alto Paraná tri-national border. The research offers an interdisciplinary contribution to understanding land change, resistance, and rural justice in South America.
