Elective Modules

In the elective area, modules totaling 40 CP must be selected and completed from the following subject areas:

Subject area 1 – Meteorology/atmospheric sciences: Modules totaling up to 40 CP can be selected and completed in this subject area:

- Modul: Satellite-based meteorology (10 CP),
- Modul: Remote sensing of atmosphere and ocean (5 CP),
- Modul: Atmospheric chemistry (5 CP),
- Modul: Physical oceanography (5 CP),
- Modul: Interdisciplinary natural risk research (5 CP),
- Modul: Mechanisms of future climate change (5 CP),
- Modul: Numerical weather prediction (5 CP),
- Modul: Cloud physics (5 CP),
- Modul: Modelling atmospheric turbulence (5 CP)
- Modul: Special topics from the Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research (5 CP),
- Modul: Special topics from dynamic meteorology (5 CP),
- Modul: Special topics from experimental meteorology (5 CP),
- Modul: Special topics from data science and machine learning in atmospheric sciences (5 CP),
- Module: Special topics from programming for numerical weather and climate models (5 CP),
- Modul: Special topics from modelling in atmospheric sciences (5 CP).

Subject area 2 – related natural sciences:

In this subject area, modules totaling a maximum of 20 LP can be selected and completed.
Modules from the fields of geographical sciences, geological sciences, planetology, physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, or biology at Freie Universität Berlin, provided that the eligibility of Master's program students has been confirmed by decision of the respective competent bodies. This applies accordingly to modules at other universities in the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. The catalog of eligible modules, as well as their objectives and content, will be communicated to prospective students and current students in a timely and appropriate manner. Applications to select other modules from additional areas may be submitted to the examination board.

Subject area 3 – interdisciplinary sciences:

One module worth 5 CP can be selected and completed in this subject area. All modules offered by Freie
Universität Berlin are available for this purpose, provided that students in the master's program have been
guaranteed eligibility by resolution of the respective competent bodies.
