The idea – topic identification

Any research proposal starts with an idea. The formulation of a research idea can be based on inspiration, knowledge and experience and it can be the answer to a call made by the donor.

The idea should be…

…realistic

…your own interest, not only buzz-words

…integrated in your area of interest

…your own, not only a copy

The process of topic identification is influenced by the kind of proposal you want to write. The main categories of proposals are:

  • wide or specific topics and
  • research or development topics.
  • the geographic scope
  • the expertise and disciplines
  • the size of a team
  • the stakeholders involved
  • the amount of funds
  • the funding horizon
  • the administrative and organizational requirements
  • the donor to be approached.

After having a good idea for a project, the problem should be stated.
