Tanks in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka

The water-harvesting and management system in Sri Lanka’s North central drylands is one of the oldest historically recorded systems in the world. Rainfall and surface runoff have been stored in manmade tanks since two millenia, providing water for irrigation throughout the year. The traditional water reservoir system has not changed much in its functioning ever since and is deeply inscribed into the landscape and into the societies utilizing them.
