Student assistant (m/f/d) 41 h/month limited to 2 years reference code: SHK-CDA-ML_2025

Application deadline: 14.04.2025

The Planetary Sciences and Remote Sensing research group at the Institute of Geological Sciences at the FU Berlin participates in various experiments in space missions of ESA, NASA and JAXA. In our two laboratories we generate analogue data for space missions with astrobiological mission objectives. We are looking for a student with enthusiasm for space missions, ideally with experience in mass spectrometry and programming skills.

The position is very suitable for a Master's thesis. Furthermore, the working group plans to establish a PhD position in this field in the course of 2026. Although a subsequent PhD is not a prerequisite for this student assistant position, this opportunity could be of interest for suitably qualified students.

Job description:

• Evaluation of mass spectra from the Cosmic Dust Analyser onboard the Cassini space probe
• Collaboration with a computer scientist who is developing a machine learning (ML) algorithm for the automated analysis of the above-mentioned mass spectra.

Desirable:
• Knowledge in the field of Planetary Sciences
• Very good written and spoken English (C1)
• Basic knowledge of mass spectrometry
• Basic knowledge of space probe navigation (SPICE) is an advantage
• Programming skills, especially in the field of machine learning, are an advantage
