New book chapter by S. Tofelde: Drainage Reorganisation in the Danube and Rhine Catchments
News from Nov 19, 2025
We’re excited to share a new book chapter Drainage Reorganisation in the Danube and Rhine Catchments as part of the book Landscapes and Landforms of Germany in collaboration with Wolfgang Schwanghart!
Drainage basins are dynamic features shaped by long-term interactions between tectonic forces and surface processes, yet constrained by the available surface area. As neighboring basins compete for space, they influence each other through complex feedbacks between landscape change and surface processes.
In this chapter, we examine these dynamics in the Danube and Rhine basins. Both rivers, draining much of Central and Eastern Europe, have undergone numerous captures and diversions that profoundly shaped the regional landscape. We discuss the mechanisms driving divide mobility and illustrate their geomorphic legacy in southwest Germany.
