Atmospheric Dynamics of the most Extreme Precipitation Events over Europe and their Possible Changes in a Warming Climate

Funding:

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

BMBF project: ClimXtreme

Heavy, large-scale precipitation events and associated floodings represent one of the greatest natural hazards for society in Europe. The rarity of these most extreme precipitation events makes systematic scientific investigations difficult. The processes behind such events are therefore not yet fully understood. This project aims to investigate the most extreme and relevant precipitation events in European river basins regarding their causative processes by using a new, innovative approach to data collection. Subsequently, differences to strong but less extreme events will be highlighted and future changes of these most extreme precipitation events in a warmer climate will be estimated.
