Main research focus

Christian Leipe’s research focuses on interactions between humans, environments and climate since the Last Glacial Maximum (ca. 25,000 years ago). As a palaeo(ethno)botanist and palaeoenvironmental researcher, he investigates how climate and environmental changes have shaped human agency and cultural trajectories, and how human activities have, in turn, transformed natural systems. While his work adopts a Eurasian perspective, his primary geographic focus is Asia.

His research integrates mainly palynology, archaeobotany and quantitative approaches to reconstruct past climate variability, environmental dynamics and human land-use practices, including agriculture and deforestation. He also examines anthropogenic landscape transformation from an archaeological perspective, using large-scale archaeological and archaeobotanical datasets from East Asia to analyse settlement patterns, population dynamics, migration processes, subsistence economies, crop dispersal and the development of early farming systems.

During a research stay at Nagoya University, Japan, he initiated and led pioneering work applying flow cytometry in Quaternary research. This work established a new method for the purification of biogenic microfossils (e.g. pollen, algae, diatoms and phytoliths) enabling advanced applications such as radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis and ancient DNA research.
