Community Engagement and Sampling

Our research teams actively engaged with local communities to raise awareness about mosquitoes, mosquito-borne diseases, and the importance of vector control. The team conducted training sessions with train and bus attendants to explain project goals, how traps operate and why it is necessary to collect mosquitoes inside vessels.

Mosquitoes are being passively transported across locations more than 100 kilometres apart through travel infrastructure, such as buses. Several ecological, infrastructural and human behavioural factors support this mobility, with poorly maintained bus stations and transit points creating unintended environments conducive to mosquito breeding.

Regular mosquito sampling was conducted in all fieldwork locations across the four country cases (TZ, MEX, IND, GER), including public transport systems such as buses, trains, and seaports (IND, TZ), as well as the surrounding areas. Mosquito species identification and genetic analysis was performed.
