Our Milestones in 2022
Kick off Workshop Mobile Mosquitoes, Heidelberg, June 2022
The workshop marked the inauguration of our research project and the very first opportunity for in- person meeting. We discussed modes of working together, importantly our communication structure, the financial accounting, the development of a shared research strategy and standard operating prodecures for the entomological fieldwork and ways of coordinating the ethnographic and qualitative research
Since then, the international team from the four partner countries meets on a monthly basis to read and discuss papers and work-in-progress, exchange and coordinate their research methods and further strategy. We update one another and conduct internal team trainings and knowledge sharing. In addition, in each country internal trainings are conducted. Here we focus on one specific example from Tanzania, where the team expanded their skills beyond the strict remit of the grant topic; yet, in an area highly relevant. Entomological specimen trapping and collections are conducted in close collaboration with anthropological fieldwork. Interdisciplinary staff travel and work together, which has prompted many interesting conversations and enabled additional insights, which, among others, led to adaptation in entomological trapping, i.e. the relocation of traps to different places due to interview results. For the anthropological study, interview/observations are conducted in all countries, offering crucial insights into the intricate dynamics of human-mosquito interactions. We were able to obtain data on the experiences and expectations of passengers, employees, unit operators and administrative personnel regarding the presence of mosquitoes in different significant locations.
