Overview and Structure of the modules
Aims and Learning Strategy
The E-Learning module teaches fundamental and advanced mathematical and statistical concepts and methods for data analysis, with a special focus on geospatial data. The datasets that will be analysed are relate to field of Environmental Earth Science, including Climatology, Hydrology, Paleoclimatology, Geochemistry, Remote Sensing, among others. The covered methods are applied on real world datasets in form of hands-on coding exercises using the statistical programming language R. The coding will embrace the whole analysis pipeline, from data import, to data cleaning and data wrangling, to exploratory data analysis, including visualizations, to modeling and finally the interpretation of the results.
Please note that the content of the present E-Learning project complements and extends the material covered in the classes Introduction to Statistics and Geostatistics, both taught at the Department of Geosciences at Freie Universitaet Berlin.
Content of the E-Learning project
The E-Learning module consits of different submodules, which allows the learner to focus on those modules of special interest. In addition the modular approach allows the creators of the E-Learning module to extend the material over time by adding more and more modules covering deven more topics.
The E-Learning project Statistics and Geospatial Data Analysis consists of three main sections:
- Introduction to the statistical programming language R
- Basics of statistics: Basic Concepts and Applications
- Geospatial data analysis
Each section is made up of a number of subsections and differenet lessons covering a particular topic. These lessons built upon each another; therefore, it is recommended to work through them in the given order. However, if you are already comfortable with any particular subject, you are welcome to skip those lessons and focus on the lessons that are of interest for you.
Some of the subsections are concluded by a hands-on coding exercise. In the exercises you are asked to programmatically solve problems either based on toy datasets or based on real world datasets.
