B.Sc. Geological Sciences

The Bachelor's program "Geological Sciences", which is hosted by the Institute of Geological Sciences and has a prescribed period of study of 6 semesters, will award the degree Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) to the student, if completed successfully. The language of instruction is German.

The following information pertains to the Study and Examination Regulations of 2012 (valid for the study period starting with the winter semester 2012/13).

The program's goal is to convey to students a diversified knowledge base in the field of Geological Sciences. They are acquainted with scientific methods and the current state of research and learn to present their findings in a both factually and verbally appropriate manner.

The program encompasses natural and geoscientific basics, adequate to give an insight into the diversity of processes which constitute and shape our planet. The natural scientific fundamentals facilitate an exact description of these processes via mathematical, physical, chemical and biological basic skills and specific methods. In the geoscientific focus the interdisciplinary competencies will be completed by subject-related methods and knowledge in geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, mineralogy-petrology, paleontology, sedimentary geology and tectonics.

At the end of the program students will be able to independently and efficiently familiarize themselves with geological topics and to plan, execute, document and finish a geological work project in a goal-oriented manner.   

Holders of a bachelor's degree in Geological Sciences will therefore have at their command knowledge and skills which qualify both for an immediate entry into professional life and for application for a consecutive master's program or one outside one's subject area.

The bachelor's program encompasses 180 credit points (abbr. LP) and conveys basic knowledge of the subject and related methods of the Geological Sciences. The program subdivides into modules of the core subject including the bachelor's thesis (150 LP) and modules of the General Professional Skills Courses including professional practical training (30 LP).

I. Core subject (120 LP)

The core subject subdivides into the following three areas of study and the Bachelor's thesis:

1. "Basic geological knowledge" („Geologisches Grundwissen“) (66 LP)

In this area of study the basics of geology are taught.

2. "Basic natural science knowledge" („Naturwissenschaftliches Grundwissen“) (40 LP)

In this area of study knowledge about methodological faculties and skills as well as scholarly working methods is imparted and trained. It encompasses several modules which subdivide into two focal sequences:

a) Module sequence with chemical and biological focus (42 LP)

This module sequence is recommended, if it is planned to focus one's studies on one of the following subjects: geochemistry, hydrogeology, mineralogy-petrology, paleontology, sedimentary geology, tectonics

b) Module sequence with mathematical and physical focus (48 LP)

This module sequence is recommended, if it is planned to focus one's studies on geophysics.

3. "Geoscientific area of concentration" ("Geowissenschaftliche Vertiefung") (30 LP oder 24 LP)

In this area of study elective modules are to be chosen from the following catalogue of the Geological Sciences and to be completed successfully. Students of module sequence 2.a) chose modules to the extent of 30 LP, Students of module sequence 2.b) to the extent of 24 LP.

4. Bachlor's thesis (12 LP)

By submitting their Bachelor's thesis students demonstrate their ability to work on a selected problem in the field of Geographical Sciences autonomously - but under supervision - according to scholarly methods and standards and to present their findings in an appropriate manner.

II. General professional skills courses (abbr. ABV) (30 LP)

This area of study contains the following parts:

·         professional practical training

·         modules out of six spheres of competence

This area provides a broadened scientific education beyond students' respective fields of study and offers to teach skills both vital to occupational and to scholarly advancement. Furthermore it offers a chance to apply already apprehended knowledge in an environment related to professional activity.

It is recommended to take the preparatory course in mathematics before the start of semester.

Knowledge of graduates of B.Sc. Geological Sciences

A professional perspective is offered in areas of geoscientific routine jobs such as

  • geological documentation, data acquisition and data processing,
  • geoscientific assistance to the personnel of a drilling platform of or specialized machines, soft- or hardware or customer service,
  • developing solutions to geoscientific problems using standardized procedures (e.g. creation of specialized maps and profiles, of catalogs and literature research)

Potential employers can be private companies such as software manufacturers, (geo)scienctific institutions or municipal administrative units – rarely job opportunities in public service arise.

For executive positions or an employment in research and teaching a Master's degree and, if applicable, the conferral of a doctorate are prerequsites.
