Weather Prediction

Lecturer: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Fabian Hoffmann (f.hoffmann@fu-berlin.de).

Admission Requirements: erfolgreiche Absolvierung des Moduls „Synoptische Meteorologie“ oder des Moduls „Strahlung und Fernerkundung“.

Qualification Objectives: Students are familiar with the theoretical and practical fundamentals and methods of weather forecasting. They are able to convey the content of scientific texts and concepts on this topic in lectures, justify and present scientific ideas and approaches, and defend them in discussions. They are also able to independently interpret current synoptic information (observations, conventional measurements, remote sensing data, diagnostic fields) and numerical forecasts (forecast fields from various numerical models, forecasting aids, etc.) and communicate this in presentations.

Contents: Seminar presentations by students using German and English-language publications from scientific journals on the fundamentals, methods, and quality of weather forecasts. Independent interpretation of synoptic meteorological fields, remote sensing data, satellite images, and forecasts from analysis data and various numerical models. Construction of ground forecast maps in the NinJo system.
