Preparation Laboratory

The Preparation Laboratory, located in Building T on the GEO campus, provides comprehensive services for the professional preparation of geological, petrographic, and palaeontological materials. The laboratory is available to all staff and students of the Department of Geosciences by appointment.

Services include the production of thin, ultra-thin, and polished sections, as well as sample preparation for specialised analytical techniques such as electron microprobe analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and fluid-inclusion analysis.

The laboratory also provides sample polishing, staining and etching, vacuum impregnation, and preservation techniques for rock samples and loose sediments. Additional specialised preparation methods can be carried out on request, depending on the material and analytical requirements.

In addition to sample preparation, the laboratory offers training and instruction in the use of laboratory equipment, basic laboratory safety, practical courses, and advice on suitable technical preparation methods.
