Active Volcanism on Venus
News from Jan 08, 2020
A recent publication in Science Advances finds that Venus is volcanically active today. The study builds on earlier research that also made the case for active volcanism on Venus, since it was known for many years that the surface of Venus is very young. The compelling evidence was now obtained from laboratory experiments: Near-infrared reflectance spectra showed a very rapid alteration of olivine, which is an abundant mineral in the volcanic rock basalt. Lava flows on Venus that lack this kind of alteration are thus no more than several years old.
