New publication: Influence of the western inlet on the northern delta in Jezero crater, Mars: Topographic-compositional analysis and sediment transport modeling
News from Feb 11, 2026
A team of researchers from Freie Universität Berlin led by Anastasiia Ovchinnikova from Prof. Frank Postberg's group, published an article in Icarus Journal on the origin of the low-calcium pyroxene (LCP) and olivine/carbonate units which were found within the western and northern deltas in Jezero crater on Mars (the landing site of the NASA’s Mars 2020 mission).
Researchers combined topographic-compositional analysis and sediment transport modeling to test the hypothesis if the LCP unit on the northern delta could be material transported by the western inlet (Neretva Vallis). Results gave insights into the depositional processes of the western and northern deltas and how they relate to each other, which is crucial for reconstructing the water history of Jezero crater on Mars.
