At the meeting of the Landing Site Selection Working Group on 9 November, 2018, Oxia Planum was elected as favored landing site for the ExoMars 2020 mission by ESA and Roscosmos, that will send a rover to Mars in 2020. Oxia Planum is situated at the boundary to the northern plains of Mars where many channels emptied into. This region has clay-rich deposits, and is characterized by a former water-rich environment and volcanic activity. Mawrth Vallis, the second site on the shortlist, has a high astrobiological potential, but is more difficult to access from engineering constraints.
