Black hole only 1000 light years away from earth
News from May 12, 2020
A team of astronomers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and other institutes has discovered a black hole just 1000 light years away from Earth. The black hole is closer to our solar system than any other black hole found so far and is part of a triple system visible to the naked eye. The team found proof of the invisible object by tracking its two companion stars with the 2.2-metre MPG/ESO telescope at ESO's La Silla observatory in Chile. This system could be the tip of an iceberg, as more similar black holes could be found in the future.
