Ingenuity - Helicopter drone flies over the Jezero Crater

News from Feb 18, 2021

When "Perseverance", NASA's Mars rover, lands tonight at around 21:55 CET, it will not be a routine visit: for the first time, a rover will collect and transport rock samples for a retrieval mission. The rover has 23 cameras and a small helicopter on board. "Ingenuity" is the name of the 1.8 kg drone that will explore the surface of the Red Planet and the thin Martian atmosphere. The Jezero crater was chosen as the landing site for good reason. The former presence of liquid water and the large carbonate deposits make the crater a perfect target for the search for possible traces of presumably extinct life on Mars.
