New Clean Room Laboratory on the GeoCampus Lankwitz now used for research
Our new geochemical clean room laboratory, known as “The Red Building” (Haus Y), at the Lankwitz GeoCampus is now officially in use.
News from Dec 09, 2025
After final fire hazard and safety evaluations, the new geochemical clean room laboratory (“The red building”, also named Haus Y) on the Lankwitz GeoCampus is now officially in use. The main purpose of the facility is to provide a particle-poor and metal-free environment during dissolution and element separation from terrestrial and extraterrestrial rock samples. Such conditions are required to limit contamination during sample preparation for mass spectrometric isotope abundance measurements. Geochemistry staff and students have eagerly awaited this moment since the air handling system of the old laboratory in Haus B failed in May 2025. The outside of the container-based lab still requires some construction, including a roof with solar panels, and thus the official lab opening will take place in 2026, after construction is completed.
