Movie Screening: Women of Science
News from May 20, 2026
The institute colloquium turned cinematic on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, with a screening of selected episodes from the international documentary series Women of Science, followed by a panel discussion with faculty and students about pathways into STEM.
Produced by Planet Schule on behalf of ARD as part of a six-film international co-production with public broadcasters from Italy, Lithuania, Austria, Belgium and the United Kingdom, the series portrays successful women working as engineers, IT experts and scientists. Each film accompanies one of them through her daily work, with the explicit aim of giving girls and young women visible role models and encouraging them to pursue careers in mathematics, computer science, the natural sciences and engineering. Audiences at the colloquium were introduced to three of the featured researchers: German aerospace engineer Tiziana Bräuer, who studies the climate impact of aircraft contrails in her pursuit of climate-friendly flying (with accompanying classroom materials on the profession of aerospace engineering); British IT specialist and CEO Anne-Marie Imafidon, whose film centers on her passion for STEM and her advocacy for opening the field to girls, young women and non-binary people; and virologist Stephanie Pfänder, who heads the "Emerging Viruses" research group and whose work drew wide public attention during the COVID-19 pandemic.
All six films in the series, together with the accompanying classroom materials, remain freely available on the Planet Schule project page for anyone who missed the screening or would like to revisit the portraits.
