Interview with Prof. Martin Voss at the Deutsche Welle about the power outage in Berlin-Steglitz-Zehlendorf
News from Feb 02, 2026
The power outage in Steglitz-Zehlendorf at the beginning of the year left around 45,000 households without electricity for several days. In a recent article by Ben Knight, Deutsche Welle (DW) reports on the power outage and how it was perceived in the city and the rest of Germany.
The article also features several experts who give their assessment of the possible lessons we can learn from the power outage. Prof. Martin Voss reported on the results of the KFS's quick response research on the power outage. The results show that the response to the power outage was quite complex in structure. The reason for this is that in Germany, responsibility for civil protection and coping with the various challenges associated with a crisis situation is distributed among many different actors. He also criticises the fact that the resilience of critical infrastructure in Germany is currently not in good shape, as there has been little investment in preparing for possible crisis scenarios since 1989 due to the assumed peace dividend.
