As clearly visible by my previous research and professional experiences I am not attached to a single discipline in geosciences. Although, deeply rooted in structural geology, I find the most exciting challenges in combining different methods and disciplines to tackle one and the same “Problem” from different sides, at different scales. This does not only result to more robust interpretations, but also raises new, and sometimes essential, questions. In this way, I conducted research on different aspects of geodynamics:

  • within the active orogenic belt of the Qilian Shan, flanking the eastern border of the Tibetan Plateau,
  • in the eastern Alps at the southern border of the Tauern Window,
  • and the deep crustal levels of the East African Orogen in Madagascar: from the Neoproterozoic to Palaeozoic amalgamation to Mesozoic to Cenozoic exhumation, rifting and finally the dispersal of Gondwana.

Besides classical methods of structural geology, sedimentology, petrography and petrology, I use methods of geochronology (In-situ U-Th-Pb dating of monazite using EMPA), thermochronology (apatite fission track analysis of crystalline and sedimentary rocks), cosmogenic nuclides (catchment wide erosion rates based on 10Be), as well as remote sensing.
